Dr. John R. Mackey is one of the founding members of BCIRG, TRIO’s original organization, and has been helping to lead international cancer systemic trials since 1998.
Dr. Mackey is a professor in the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta and the Director of the Clinical Research Unit and Staff Medical Oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. He holds an MD from the University of Alberta and fellowship training in internal medicine and medical oncology.
One of the areas he is focused on is the study of molecular mechanisms underlying drug resistance, and exploration of innovative ways to prevent and modulate these resistance mechanisms. Working with fellow team members, he developed and commercialized clinical tests to predict which patients are most likely to benefit from specific anticancer therapies including nucleoside analogues, taxanes, and N-myristoyltransferase inhibitors.
To date, Dr. Mackey holds six patents, is the founder of two biotechnology companies, and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed cancer-related research papers.
