Dr. Miguel Martin is one of the founding members of BCIRG, TRIO’s original organization. He currently serves as Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain. He is also a Professor of Medical Oncology at the Complutense University of Madrid and the Chairman of GEICAM (Spanish Group for Breast Cancer Research)—a cooperative network involving more than 150 Spanish institutions.
After studying medicine at the University of Valladolid in Spain between 1971 and 1977, Dr. Martin did his residency from 1980 to 1983 in Internal Medicine/Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario San Carlos in Madrid. In 1984, he received the Spanish Certification in Medical Oncology. He then went on to obtain his PhD in 1985 and the European Certification on Medical Oncology in 1989.
He is the first or corresponding author of more than 120 original articles in Spanish and international journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Seminars in Oncology and many others that are mainly devoted to breast cancer research and treatment, new cancer drugs and supportive care. He is an active member of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the American Society of Breast Diseases, European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC).
Dr. Martin was elected president of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) in 2015 and continues to make an impact in the medical community.
